When we walk into a wine shop, the first thing we usually look for on the label is the name of the grape variety. Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot – these are the 'stars' of the wine world. Each variety has its own unique character, aromas, flavors, and style, which define how we will experience the wine in our glass.

As part of our “Wine ABC” series, today we present a brief and clear guide to the most popular international wine grape varieties, so you can choose your next bottle with greater confidence.

Major Red Grape Varieties: 'Power and Velvet

Perfect with: BBQ, game, and spicy dishes.

Cabernet Sauvignon: “The King of Red Wines”
Character: Full-bodied, with powerful tannins and high acidity. Wines with great aging potential.

Aromas: Blackcurrant, black cherry, green bell pepper, oak, and cedar.

Perfect with: Beef, steaks, lamb, and aged cheeses.
